This is a working overview of Mass spectrometry, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.

Long-term storage of the dry powder is typically described at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, while shorter holding periods may use ordinary refrigeration. Repeated warming and cooling cycles are discouraged because they stress the material and can promote aggregation or loss. Light exposure and residual moisture are both treated as avoidable sources of degradation, and working aliquots are often prepared to limit how many times a container is opened. Sealed vials with a desiccant are the usual container.
Quality assessment rests on two separate questions: whether the chain is the intended one, and how much of the sample is that chain. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is the standard purity measurement, while mass spectrometry confirms identity through the observed molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and sequence verification provide further checks. A reported purity percentage describes the proportion of the sample represented by the main peak, not the amount of peptide by mass, since counter-ions and water make up part of any lyophilized lot.
Material of this kind is sold for laboratory research, and labels typically state that it is not intended for human or veterinary use. In many countries it is not an approved medicine, and sports antidoping rules place it among prohibited non-approved substances. Buyers commonly review a certificate of analysis, an independent test report, and the declared storage conditions. Batch-to-batch variation in purity and in counterion content is possible, and how much that variation affects experimental outcomes remains an open question.
Lyophilized peptide is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, away from light and moisture. Powder held under those conditions is widely treated as stable for long periods, although published stability studies for this exact sequence are sparse and often come from suppliers rather than independent laboratories. Once dissolved, solutions are generally handled cold and used within a short window, because peptide bonds can hydrolyze over time. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are usually avoided to limit losses, and exact shelf-life figures depend on the buffer and the concentration involved.
Purity is ordinarily reported as a percentage from reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, where the area of the main peak is compared with the total peak area. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry, since the measured mass can be checked against the value calculated from the sequence. Some certificates also include amino acid analysis or sequence confirmation by tandem mass spectrometry. A single purity number does not describe the profile of related impurities, so the underlying chromatogram and spectrum usually carry more information than the headline figure.

Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, corresponding to a partial fragment of a larger protein detected in human gastric juice. The name derives from the parent protein designation BPC, an abbreviation of body protection compound, with 157 acting as a fraction or batch identifier used by the original investigators. Its molecular weight is approximately 1419 daltons, and the chain contains no unusual residues or disulfide bridges. In the literature it is described as a short, water-soluble fragment rather than a complete natural protein.
Supplied material is typically a lyophilized white to off-white powder. The peptide is freely soluble in water and in common aqueous buffers, which allows it to be handled as a stock solution. Because the sequence contains no cysteine, disulfide cross-linking is not a route of degradation. The absence of aromatic residues means ultraviolet absorbance at 280 nm is minimal, so quantification usually relies on peptide bond absorbance near 214 nm or on amino acid analysis.
Common synonyms in catalogs include pentadecapeptide BPC 157, BPC157, and the full sequence name. A CAS registry number in the 137525-51-0 range is frequently listed, though the assignment should be verified against the supplier certificate of analysis. The name itself is not a pharmacopoeial designation, and there is no standardized international nonproprietary name. Distinguishing genuine material from related fragments generally requires mass spectrometry, since several truncated sequences share similar chromatographic behavior.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide whose sequence is commonly given as Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. It is described in the literature as a fragment of a larger protein found in human gastric juice, referred to as body protection compound. The peptide was first characterized in the early 1990s by a research group in Zagreb, Croatia. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.
=== Personal life === Ethel Florey's health deteriorated. She had hypertension and respiratory and heart problems, and walked with a stick. She travelled to Australia one more time in 1965 to give lectures on penicillin, but collapsed in Canberra and was hospitalised in Sydney. She recovered sufficiently to return to Oxford. When she found out that her son Charles was getting married at Fulton's house in New Haven in 1966, she wanted to attend. Florey refused to pay for this; if she collapsed in the United States the cost of medical care would be astronomical. Robert Webb, an American friend from the Cambridge days arranged for US$5,000 (equivalent to $50,000 in 2025) of insurance cover to allow her to attend. She died in Oxford on 10 October 1966. On 6 June 1967, Florey married Margaret Jennings at the Old Register Office in St Giles', Oxford, in a ceremony deliberately kept as quiet as possible. The only other persons present were Jim Kent and Cecilia Little, Jennings's housekeeper, who acted as witnesses. There was a small celebration in Florey's rooms at Queen's College and they honeymooned in the Caribbean before visiting Fulton in New Haven.
Prior to this, there had been failed synthesis attempts in 1986–87 at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (then in the Soviet Union) and in 1990 at the GSI. A 1995 attempt at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory resulted in signs suggesting but not pointing conclusively at the discovery of a new isotope 267Ds formed in the bombardment of 209Bi with 59Co, and a similarly inconclusive 1994 attempt at the JINR showed signs of 273Ds being produced from 244Pu and 34S. Each team proposed its own name for element 110: the American team proposed hahnium after Otto Hahn in an attempt to resolve the controversy of naming element 105 (which they had long been suggesting this name for), the Russian team proposed becquerelium after Henri Becquerel, and the German team proposed darmstadtium after Darmstadt, the location of their institute. The IUPAC/IUPAP Joint Working Party (JWP) recognised the GSI team as discoverers in their 2001 report, giving them the right to suggest a name for the element.
=== America, Iran, and Under Milk Wood, 1950–1953 === American poet John Brinnin invited Thomas to New York, where in February 1950 they embarked on a lucrative three-month tour of arts centres and campuses. The tour, which began in front of an audience of a thousand at the Kaufmann Auditorium of the Poetry Centre in New York, took in about 40 venues. During the tour, Thomas was invited to many parties and functions and on several occasions became drunk—going out of his way to shock people—and was a difficult guest. Thomas drank before some of his readings, though it is argued he may have pretended to be more affected by it than he actually was. The writer Elizabeth Hardwick recalled how intoxicating a performer he was and how the tension would build before a performance: "Would he arrive only to break down on the stage? Would some dismaying scene take place at the faculty party? Would he be offensive, violent, obscene?" Caitlin said in her memoir, "Nobody ever needed encouragement less, and he was drowned in it." On returning to Britain, Thomas began work on two further poems, "In the white giant's thigh", which he read on the Third Programme in September 1950, and the incomplete "In country heaven". In October, Thomas sent a draft of the first 39 pages of 'The Town That Was Mad' to the BBC. The task of seeing this work through to production as Under Milk Wood was assigned to the BBC's Douglas Cleverdon, who had been responsible for casting Thomas in 'Paradise Lost'.
== Military campaigns in Syria and Jazira == Ubayd Allah fought for Marwan and his tribal allies against the Qaysi tribes led by al-Dahhak ibn Qays al-Fihri, the governor of Damascus, at the Battle of Marj Rahit in August 684. The Qays were routed and al-Dahhak killed. Ubayd Allah was put in command of Marwan's army which, during Marj Rahit, consisted of 6,000 men from a handful of loyalist tribes. According to Kennedy, Ubayd Allah "clearly intended to rebuild the Syrian army which had served Mu'awiya and Yazid I so well". In the aftermath of Marj Rahit, Ubayd Allah oversaw campaigns against rebel Qaysi tribes for Marwan and his son and successor Abd al-Malik (r. 685–705) in the Jazira. However, Marwan's forces were too little to assert Umayyad rule throughout the caliphate. Thus, Ubayd Allah expanded recruitment to include various Qaysi tribes. He placed Husayn ibn Numayr al-Sakuni of Kindah as his second-in-command, and Shurahbil ibn Dhi'l Kala' of Himyar, Adham ibn Muhriz of Bahila, Rabi'a ibn al-Mukhariq of Banu Ghani and Jabala ibn Abd Allah of Khath'am as deputy commanders. Other than Husayn ibn Numayr, all of the commanders were either Qaysi or had earlier supported al-Dahhak against Marwan. In January 685, as Ubayd Allah was in Manbij preparing for the Umayyad reconquest of Iraq, Husayn ibn Numayr defeated the pro-Alid Penitents at the Battle of Ayn al-Warda. Ubayd Allah had been promised by Marwan the governorship over all of the lands he could conquer from the Alids and Ibn al-Zubayr, and he may have been sanctioned to plunder Kufa.
== Adverse effects == Besides being a hepatocarcinogen, safrole exhibits further adverse effects in that it will induce the formation of hepatic lipid hydroperoxides. Safrole also inhibits the defensive function of neutrophils against bacteria. In addition to the inhibition of the defensive function of neutrophils, it has also been discovered that safrole interferes with the formation of superoxides by neutrophils. Furthermore, safrole oxide, a metabolite of safrole, has a negative effect on the central nervous system. Safrole oxide inhibits the expression of integrin β4/SOD, leading to apoptosis of the nerve cells.

Prior to 2000, only seven film series had grossed over $1 billion at the box office: James Bond, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Rocky, Batman, Jurassic Park, and Star Trek. Since the turn of the century, that number has increased to over a hundred. This is partly due to inflation and market growth, but it is also due to Hollywood's adoption of the franchise model: films that have built-in brand recognition such as being based on a well-known literary source or an established character. The methodology is based on the concept that films associated with things audiences are already familiar with can be more effectively marketed to them, and as such are known as "pre-sold" films within the industry. A franchise is typically defined to be at least two works derived from a common intellectual property. Traditionally, the work has a tautological relationship with the property, but this is not a prerequisite. An enduring staple of the franchise model is the concept of the crossover, which can be defined as "a story in which characters or concepts from two or more discrete texts or series of texts meet". A consequence of a crossover is that an intellectual property may be utilized by more than one franchise. For example, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice belongs to not only the Batman and Superman franchises, but also to the DC Extended Universe, which is a shared universe. A shared universe is a particular type of crossover where a number of characters from a wide range of fictional works wind up sharing a fictional world.
These observations did not demonstrate whether cholesterol present in the animal body was due to synthesis or whether it had all actually come from vegetable food. The transformation of plant sterols into cholesterol within the body of an animal requires the sterol to be absorbable. This is the notion Schoenheimer investigated in his experiments. One of his experiments involved administering two different diets to a group of rabbits. Rabbits are sensitive to a diet which includes cholesterol, and their bodily responses particularly that of the aorta demonstrates a change that similarly resembles the Human atherosclerosis. In the experiment one diet involved a large amount of sito-sterol, which is a type of plant sterol. The other diet included cholesterol. The observations of the experiment indicated that Schoenheimer and his associates' theories that plant sterols were not absorbable were probable. Furthur studies were conducted and the findings concluded that plant sterols were non-absorbable, and therefore animals with plant only diets must synthesise the cholesterol necessary for their tissues as they do not receive absorbable cholesterol. During this period Schoenheimer became aware that cholesterol had an intermediary metabolism and that it was chemically inconvertable with other sterols. In one of his later experiments using sterols, he did discover a small percentage of one sterol, dihydrocholesterol in animal tissue. He investigated this finding using a dog which showed dihydrocholesterol was formed in the tissues.
Chronic social defeat stress produces a counterintuitive long-lasting downregulation of prodynorphin mRNA levels in the NAcc (occurring by day 10 of chronic exposure), and this downregulation is reversed by chronic treatment with standard antidepressant medication (imipramine). Despite this molecular downregulation, behavioral signs of stress-induced dysphoria, anhedonia, and anxiety persist and even intensify with repeated stress exposure, indicating that the coupling between dynorphin release and KOR phosphorylation, as well as the downstream consequences of KOR activation, may become sensitized through counter-adaptations in post-receptor signaling or in competing inhibitory circuits. This process involves: § Signaling after internalisation.
=== Elimination === Testosterone and its metabolites are eliminated in urine. It is excreted mainly as androsterone glucuronide and etiocholanolone glucuronide. It is also excreted to a small extent as other conjugates such as testosterone glucuronide (1%), testosterone sulfate (0.03%), and androstanediol glucuronides. Only a very small amount of testosterone (less than 0.01%) is found unchanged in the urine.
14 March – SpaceX successfully launches the Starship spacecraft, but loses the rocket upon re-entering the atmosphere. 19 March Scientists demonstrate a wireless network of 78 tiny sensors able to gather data from the brain, with potential to be scaled up to thousands of such devices. Researchers with the National Severe Storms Laboratory, Storm Prediction Center, CIWRO, and the University of Oklahoma's School of Meteorology publish a paper where they state, ">20% of supercell tornadoes may be capable of producing EF4–EF5 damage" and that "the legacy F-scale wind speed ranges may ultimately provide a better estimate of peak tornado wind speeds at 10–15 m AGL for strong–violent tornadoes and a better damage-based intensity rating for all tornadoes" and also put the general 0–5 ranking scale in question. 20 March – The removal of HIV from infected cells using CRISPR gene editing technology is reported. 26 March – A study outlines identified ecological pandemic prevention measures for policy frameworks.

The dry powder is the stable form and the dissolved form is comparatively fragile. Freezing a solution slows degradation but does not stop it, and repeated freezing and thawing adds further stress. Many laboratories therefore prepare small single-use portions rather than storing one large volume.
It describes the share of the chromatographic signal belonging to the main peak, not the mass fraction of peptide in the vial. Water, counter-ions such as acetate or trifluoroacetate, and residual solvents account for part of the weight of a lyophilized lot. Peptide content by mass is a separate measurement and is often reported alongside purity.
Mass spectrometry is the primary check, because the measured mass can be compared with the expected value for the fifteen-residue chain. Sequence analysis or amino acid composition provides an independent confirmation. Purity testing alone does not establish identity, since a mixture of unrelated short peptides can still produce a clean-looking chromatogram.
The standard approach is reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, reported as a percentage of total peak area. Because that figure alone says little about the nature of the impurities, the accompanying chromatogram is normally the more useful document for judging a batch.
